Best Under-Desk Keyboard Trays 2026: Clamp-On vs Track

Updated

Short answer

If your desk has a flat front edge and no crossbar, the VIVO MOUNT-KB05E is the simplest pick: it clamps on without drilling and its 26.8 in tray fits a full-size keyboard and a mouse. The BONTEC clamp-on tray is the budget alternative for desks up to 1.97 in thick, and the VIVO MOUNT-KB05HB adds 2.4 in of height adjustment for desks up to about 3.4 in thick. For negative tilt and swivel, look at the screw-on HUANUO or the 3M AKT90LE arm.

Help me choose

Start with the VIVO MOUNT-KB05E if your desk has a flat edge and you don't want to drill. Pick the BONTEC to spend less or if your desk is up to 2 in thick, and the VIVO MOUNT-KB05HB if your desk is thick or you need the keyboard lower. If you want negative tilt and swivel, the HUANUO and 3M AKT90LE screw into the underside of the desk. The Fellowes Office Suites drawer is the small-desk option, with a separate mouse tray that stows away.

How to choose

Clamp-on or screw-on track

Clamp-on trays (both VIVOs and the BONTEC) grip the front edge of the desk, so there's no drilling, which suits rented or shared desks. The edge has to be flat: all three say they don't fit beveled or rounded edges, or a crossbar where the clamps sit. Track-mounted trays (HUANUO, Fellowes and 3M) screw into the underside. They take more work to fit, but that is what lets a tray swivel, tilt and stow fully under the desk.

Desk thickness

This is the spec people miss. The VIVO MOUNT-KB05E clamps desks 0.5-1.25 in thick, the BONTEC up to 1.97 in and the VIVO MOUNT-KB05HB up to about 3.4 in. Screw-on trays need enough material for the screws: HUANUO asks for a desktop over 0.6 in thick.

Space under the desk

Measure before you buy. The BONTEC needs 31.3 in of clear width and 11.8 in of depth, and the Fellowes needs 23.5 x 14.5 in. The HUANUO needs 14.17 in from the front edge to any crossbar, and 3M says the AKT90LE needs 26 x 23.25 in, which rules out many shallow desks and standing-desk frames.

Height, tilt and standing desks

A tray's job is to put the keyboard lower than the desktop so your elbows sit at about 90 degrees. Fixed clamp-on trays sit about 1.5-2.75 in below the desk surface (VIVO MOUNT-KB05E figures), the KB05HB can go lower, and the HUANUO and 3M arms add negative tilt. On a sit-stand desk the tray moves with the desktop, so check that it clears the frame's crossbar and won't hit your legs or chair arms at the lowest height.

Who should buy which

  • Buy the VIVO MOUNT-KB05E if… your desk is 0.5-1.25 in thick with a flat front edge and no crossbar under it, and you don't want to drill. Check price
  • Buy the VIVO MOUNT-KB05HB if… your desk is thicker than a standard clamp tray allows, or you need the keyboard lower. The height is set with hardware at install, and there is no tilt. Check price
  • Buy the HUANUO if… you want negative tilt and swivel without paying for a premium arm and you are fine screwing it into the desk. The listing doesn't state a maximum load or a warranty. Check price
  • Buy the Fellowes drawer if… you have a small desk and a compact keyboard, and want a mouse tray that tucks away under the drawer. Check price

FAQ

Are clamp-on keyboard trays as sturdy as screw-on ones?

Both kinds hold a keyboard and mouse; the three clamp-on trays here are rated for 11 lb. A clamp-on tray has no swivel or tilt and needs a flat desk edge, while a screw-on track can carry an adjustable arm and slide fully under the desk.

Will a keyboard tray work on a standing desk?

Usually, because the tray moves with the desktop. Check the space between the front edge and the frame's crossbar against the tray's track depth (14.17 in for the HUANUO, 23.25 in for the 3M), and make sure a clamp-on tray won't sit where the frame is.

How thick can my desk be for a clamp-on keyboard tray?

It depends on the model: 0.5-1.25 in for the VIVO MOUNT-KB05E, up to 1.97 in for the BONTEC and up to about 3.4 in for the VIVO MOUNT-KB05HB. None of the three fit beveled or rounded edges.

What is negative tilt and do I need it?

Negative tilt means the back of the keyboard sits lower than the front. Some ergonomic guidance suggests it to keep your wrists straighter when the keyboard is below elbow height. Of the trays here, only the HUANUO (to -22 degrees) and the 3M AKT90LE (to -15 degrees) offer it.

Do I need to drill into my desk?

Not with the VIVO and BONTEC clamp-on trays. The HUANUO, Fellowes and 3M trays all screw into the underside of the desk.
