Best Docking Stations 2026: USB-C and Thunderbolt Docks Compared

Updated

Short answer

The Plugable TBT4-UD5 is the best docking station for most Thunderbolt 4, USB4 and recent Mac laptops: two 4K 60Hz HDMI monitors, 96W charging and 13 ports from one cable. The Anker 555 8-in-1 hub is the budget pick for one monitor, and the Plugable UD-6950PDH DisplayLink dock is the way to run two monitors on a base M1, M2 or M3 MacBook.

Help me choose

If your laptop has Thunderbolt 4 or USB4, or it's a Mac that supports two external displays, the Plugable TBT4-UD5 is the safest all-round dock. It runs two 4K 60Hz monitors over plain HDMI, charges the laptop at 96W and adds 13 ports, with no driver. If you only need one monitor plus Ethernet and USB, the Anker 555 8-in-1 hub does the job for much less. If you have a base M1, M2 or M3 MacBook and want two extended monitors, a DisplayLink dock such as the Plugable UD-6950PDH works around Apple's display limit.

How to choose

How many monitors your laptop can drive

The laptop sets the limit, not just the dock. Plugable and CalDigit say base M1 and M2 Macs support one external display through their docks, base M3 supports two only with the lid closed, and M4/M5 and Pro/Max chips support two. On Thunderbolt 3 or plain USB-C laptops, Plugable says the TBT4-UD5 drops to one display. Watch the refresh rate too: the Anker Dual Monitor hub runs two screens at 4K 30Hz.

Hub, USB-C dock or Thunderbolt dock

A USB-C hub (Anker 555, Anker Dual Monitor) is small and cheap and passes power through from your own charger. A powered USB-C dock (Dell WD25, Plugable UD-6950PDH) has its own power supply. A Thunderbolt 4 dock (Plugable TBT4-UD5, CalDigit TS4) uses a 40Gbps link with room for two high-resolution monitors and fast storage, and is only worth it on Thunderbolt 4/USB4 laptops or recent Macs.

The Mac dual-monitor catch

macOS doesn't support DisplayPort MST for extended displays, the method many USB-C hubs use to split one video signal across two screens, and Anker's listing says its Dual Monitor hub shows the same image on both monitors on macOS. DisplayLink docks such as the Plugable UD-6950PDH and WAVLINK dock get around this with a driver, but Plugable notes protected streaming video won't play while one is connected on macOS and Retina scaling isn't available on DisplayLink screens.

Laptop charging

Match or beat the wattage on your laptop's own charger. Here it ranges from 100W (Plugable UD-6950PDH) and 98W (CalDigit TS4) to 96W (Plugable TBT4-UD5, Dell WD25), 85W pass-through on the Anker hubs (with a 100W charger plugged in), and none on the WAVLINK DisplayLink dock.

Ports, Ethernet and operating system

Count what you plug in every day and add a spare or two. Every pick has wired Ethernet; the Dell WD25 and CalDigit TS4 offer 2.5GbE. Check the OS list: both Anker hubs and the WAVLINK say they aren't compatible with Linux, and macOS isn't listed in Dell's US user guide for the WD25.

FAQ

What is the best docking station for a home office?

Based on published specs and Amazon ratings checked October 25, 2026, the Plugable TBT4-UD5 is a solid all-round choice for Thunderbolt 4/USB4 laptops and recent Macs: two 4K 60Hz HDMI monitors, 96W charging and 13 ports. For one monitor on a budget, the Anker 555 hub. For two monitors on a base MacBook Air, a DisplayLink dock like the Plugable UD-6950PDH.

What's the difference between a Thunderbolt dock and a USB-C hub?

A USB-C hub is small, usually relies on your laptop charger for pass-through power, and shares a 10Gbps-or-slower link between video and data. A Thunderbolt 4 dock has its own power supply and a 40Gbps link, with enough bandwidth for two high-resolution monitors plus fast storage. It only reaches its full potential on Thunderbolt 4/USB4 laptops and recent Macs.

Can a USB-C docking station run two monitors on a Mac?

Only in some cases. macOS doesn't support DisplayPort MST for extended displays, and Anker's listing says its Dual Monitor hub shows the same image on both screens on macOS. Thunderbolt 4 docks run two screens on M4/M5 and Pro/Max Macs, and DisplayLink docks such as the Plugable UD-6950PDH run two on base M1, M2 and M3 Macs with a driver.

How many watts of charging do I need from a dock?

Match or beat the wattage printed on your laptop's own charger. In our comparison the strongest are the Plugable UD-6950PDH (100W), CalDigit TS4 (98W), and Plugable TBT4-UD5 and Dell WD25 (96W). The Anker hubs pass through up to 85W from your own charger, and the WAVLINK DisplayLink dock doesn't charge the laptop.

Do I need a Thunderbolt dock if my laptop is plain USB-C?

No. On a USB-C laptop without Thunderbolt or USB4, Plugable says the TBT4-UD5 drops to one external display. A USB-C hub or dock costs less and does the same job.
