Short answer: if your desk has a flat edge and no crossbar near the front, the VIVO MOUNT-KB05E is the simplest place to start. It clamps on without drilling, and its 26.8 in tray fits a full-size keyboard and a mouse. For less money, the BONTEC clamp-on tray also handles desks up to 1.97 in thick. If your desk is thick or you want the tray lower, the VIVO MOUNT-KB05HB adds 2.4 in of height adjustment and clamps desks up to about 3.4 in. If you want negative tilt and swivel without paying for a premium arm, look at the HUANUO swivel tray, though you'll need to screw it on. On a small desk or a tight budget, the Fellowes Office Suites drawer has a mouse tray that tucks away. And if you want a proper ergonomic arm, the 3M AKT90LE has lift-to-adjust height, negative tilt, a 360° swivel and a lifetime warranty on the arm.

_How we put this together: we compared specs and Amazon ratings from the public Amazon US listings and manufacturer pages, checked on October 25, 2026. We have not tested these keyboard trays hands-on and we don't quote individual reviews. Where Amazon shows one rating count across several colors, sizes or styles, we leave the count out (marked †) because it isn't specific to the model shown._

What actually matters in a keyboard tray

Clamp or screw-on track. Clamp-on trays (both VIVOs and the BONTEC) grip the front edge of the desk, so there's no drilling. That suits rented or shared desks and anyone who might move the tray later. The catch is that the edge has to be flat: all three say they don't work with beveled or rounded edges, or with a crossbar where the clamps sit. Track-mounted trays (HUANUO, Fellowes and 3M) screw into the underside. They take more work to fit, but that's what lets the tray swivel, tilt and stow fully under the desk.

Desk thickness. This is the spec people miss. The VIVO KB05E clamps desks 0.5–1.25 in thick, the BONTEC up to 1.97 in and the VIVO KB05HB up to about 3.4 in. Screw-on trays need enough wood for the screws: HUANUO asks for a desktop over 0.6 in thick.

Space under the desk. Measure before you buy. The BONTEC needs 31.3 in of clear width and 11.8 in of depth. The Fellowes needs 23.5 × 14.5 in. The HUANUO needs 14.17 in from the front edge to any crossbar, and 3M says the AKT90LE needs 26 × 23.25 in, which rules out a lot of shallow and standing desks.

Standing desks. A keyboard tray moves with the desktop, so it works on a sit-stand desk as long as it clears the frame. The usual problem is the crossbar or motor housing under the front of the desk: check the clearance against the track depth above. Also check that the tray won't hit your legs or chair arms at the lowest desk height.

Height and tilt. The point of a tray is to get your keyboard lower than the desktop, so your elbows sit at about 90 degrees with your shoulders relaxed. The fixed clamp-on trays put the keyboard about 1.5–2.75 in below the desk surface (VIVO KB05E figures). The KB05HB can go lower (VIVO says up to 7 in), and the HUANUO and 3M arms add negative tilt, where the back of the keyboard sits lower than the front. Some ergonomic guides suggest it for keeping your wrists straight.

Tray width and the mouse. The wide flat trays (25.6–26.8 in) hold a full-size keyboard and a mouse side by side. The HUANUO is 25 in, but its built-in wrist rest leaves room for keyboards up to about 17.3 × 5.5 in plus a mouse. The Fellowes fits keyboards up to 20 in wide, with a separate mouse tray that mounts on the left or right. If you use a vertical mouse or a tall split keyboard, check the clearance under the desk too.

VIVO MOUNT-KB05E: best for most desks, no drilling

4.4 stars† · Amazon rating as of Oct 2026

VIVO's clamp-on tray was ranked #1 in Amazon's Keyboard Drawers category when we checked. The 26.8 × 11 in tray (32.5 in including the clamps) holds up to 11 lb and slides out 8.5 in. VIVO says it fits desks 0.5–1.25 in thick and puts the tray about 1.5–2.75 in below the desk surface. VIVO lists a 3-year warranty.

  • Worth it if: your desk has a flat front edge, no crossbar under it, and you don't want to drill.
  • Skip it if: your desk is thicker than 1.25 in, has a beveled edge, or you need the keyboard much lower or tilted (see the KB05HB or HUANUO).

BONTEC clamp-on keyboard tray: lowest-cost clamp-on

4.4 stars† · Amazon rating as of Oct 2026

The BONTEC does the same job as the VIVO for less (it was on sale when we checked). The tray is 25.6 × 11.8 in, holds up to 11 lb, and the clamps fit desks up to 1.97 in thick, which is thicker than the KB05E. BONTEC says you need 31.3 in of width and 11.8 in of depth clear under the desk, and it won't fit curved or beveled edges, crossbars or desks with a drawer in the way.

  • Worth it if: you want a no-drill tray for the least money, or your desk is between 1.25 and 2 in thick.
  • Skip it if: you want a stated warranty (the listing doesn't give one) or any height or tilt adjustment.

VIVO MOUNT-KB05HB: clamp-on with height adjustment

4.3 stars† · Amazon rating as of Oct 2026

This is the height-adjustable version of VIVO's clamp-on tray. It has the same 26.8 × 11 in tray and 11 lb limit, but the side brackets give 2.4 in of height adjustment in 5 steps, and VIVO says the clamps fit desks from 0.5 to 3.4 in thick. Depending on your desk and the setting, the tray sits 0.25–7 in below the desk surface. The height is set with hardware when you install it, not with a lever, and there's no tilt. VIVO lists a 3-year warranty.

  • Worth it if: your desk is thick, or the KB05E wouldn't put your keyboard low enough.
  • Skip it if: you want to change the height or tilt day to day, or your desk edge is beveled.

HUANUO swivel keyboard tray: negative tilt on a budget

4.3 stars† · Amazon rating as of Oct 2026

The HUANUO is an adjustable keyboard arm for a fraction of the 3M's price. The manufacturer says it gives 6.3 in of height adjustment, tilts from +6° to −22°, and swivels 180°. The 25 × 9.84 in platform has a built-in wrist rest and fits keyboards up to about 17.3 × 5.5 in plus a mouse. It screws into the underside of the desk (desktop over 0.6 in thick) and needs 14.17 in from the front edge to any crossbar. The listing doesn't state a maximum load or a warranty.

  • Worth it if: you want negative tilt and swivel and don't mind drilling.
  • Skip it if: you're not a Prime member (the lowest price we saw was for Prime members only), your desk is shallow, or you have a wide keyboard.

Fellowes Office Suites keyboard drawer: cheapest, with a mouse tray

4.3 stars (6,603 ratings) · Amazon rating as of Oct 2026

A long-running plastic drawer that screws under the desk. It has 3 height positions, fits keyboards up to 20 in wide and 7⅝ in deep, and comes with a 7.25 × 7.5 in mouse tray that mounts on either side and slides under the drawer when you don't need it. It needs 23.5 × 14.5 in of clear space under the desk. Fellowes doesn't state a maximum load on the listing.

  • Worth it if: you have a small desk, a compact keyboard, and want the cheapest option.
  • Skip it if: you use a full-size keyboard with a number pad and want it next to the mouse on one surface, or you don't want to drill.

3M AKT90LE: a full ergonomic keyboard arm

4.2 stars† · Amazon rating as of Oct 2026

The 3M is the most fully featured tray here. You lift the platform to change the height, with no lever, and a knob sets tilt from +10° to −15°. It swivels 360° and stows under the desk. 3M's published height figures conflict between pages, so check the listing for the exact range before you buy. The wood platform comes with a gel wrist rest and a mouse pad that goes on either side. The warranty is lifetime on the arm, 5 years on the platform and 1 year on the wrist rest. It needs a lot of room: 3M says 26 in wide and 23.25 in deep under the desk.

  • Worth it if: you type all day, want negative tilt and swivel, and have a deep desk.
  • Skip it if: your desk is under about 24 in deep, or you'd rather not pay for a premium arm.

Which keyboard tray should you buy?

  • Flat-edged desk, no drilling: VIVO MOUNT-KB05E, or the BONTEC to save a little or if your desk is up to 2 in thick.
  • Thick desk, or you need the keyboard lower: VIVO MOUNT-KB05HB.
  • Negative tilt and swivel on a budget: HUANUO, if you're happy to screw it on.
  • Small desk, small budget: Fellowes Office Suites drawer.
  • All-day typing, deep desk: 3M AKT90LE.

Keyboard tray FAQ

Are clamp-on keyboard trays as sturdy as screw-on ones?

Both kinds hold a keyboard and mouse. The clamp-on trays here are rated for 11 lb. The difference is that a clamp-on tray has no swivel or tilt and needs a flat desk edge, while a screw-on track can carry an adjustable arm and slides fully under the desk.

Will a keyboard tray work on a standing desk?

Usually, yes, because the tray moves with the desktop. Check the space between the front edge and the frame's crossbar against the tray's track depth (14.17 in for the HUANUO, 23.25 in for the 3M), and make sure a clamp-on tray won't sit where the frame is.

How thick can my desk be for a clamp-on keyboard tray?

It depends on the model: 0.5–1.25 in for the VIVO MOUNT-KB05E, up to 1.97 in for the BONTEC and up to about 3.4 in for the VIVO MOUNT-KB05HB. None of the three fit beveled or rounded edges.

What is negative tilt and do I need it?

Negative tilt means the back of the keyboard sits lower than the front. Some ergonomic guidance suggests it to keep your wrists straighter when the keyboard is below elbow height. Of the trays here, only the HUANUO (to −22°) and 3M AKT90LE (to −15°) offer it.

How wide should a keyboard tray be?

For a full-size keyboard and a mouse on one surface, aim for about 25 in or more. That's what the VIVO, BONTEC and HUANUO trays offer. Narrower trays like the Fellowes use a separate mouse platform.

Do I need to drill into my desk?

Not with the VIVO and BONTEC clamp-on trays. The HUANUO, Fellowes and 3M trays all screw into the underside of the desk.
