Short answer: for most people the SIHOO M18 is the one to start with. It has an adjustable headrest, adjustable lumbar support and a 3-year warranty, and it was on a limited-time deal when we checked. If you want 3D armrests and a lumbar pad you can move in two directions for about the same money, the Marsail ergonomic mesh chair is the value pick. If you care most about warranty and a well-known seller, the Staples Dexley has a 5-year limited warranty and the highest Amazon rating here (4.5 out of 5 as of Oct 2026).
_How we put this together: we compared specs and buyer ratings. That means manufacturer spec pages, the specs on each Amazon listing, and public Amazon ratings, all checked on October 25, 2026. We have not tested these chairs hands-on and we don't quote individual reviews. Where Amazon shows the same rating count on several different listings, we leave the count out (marked †) because it isn't specific to that chair. Prices change often, so check the current price before you buy._

What actually matters in a budget office chair
- Lumbar support you can move. A lumbar pad that adjusts up and down (and ideally in and out) is the biggest step up from a basic task chair. The Amazon Basics and Flash Kelista have a fixed, shaped back instead.
- Seat height and seat depth. None of these seven lists a sliding seat, so check the seat depth against your thigh length. If you're short, a deep seat pushes you forward, away from the backrest. If you're tall, a short seat leaves your thighs unsupported. Most desks are about 29–30 in tall, and a seat that tops out near 21 in suits most people at that height.
- Armrests. "2D" arms move up/down and forward/back. "3D" arms also pivot. Flip-up arms let you slide closer to the desk.
- Weight rating and warranty. These range from 250 to 300 lb and from 1 to 5 years. Both tell you how the manufacturer expects the chair to hold up.
- Mesh vs padded. Mesh backs stay cooler. Padded seats (Marsail, Amazon Basics) suit people who find mesh seats firm.
- Price swings. Two of these (the SIHOO M18 and M57) were on sale when we checked. The M57 is only a budget chair while its discount lasts.
If you sit for most of the day and can spend more, our ergonomic chairs buying guide compares the Herman Miller Aeron, Steelcase Series 1 and Branch Ergonomic Chair.
SIHOO M18: best budget ergonomic chair for most people
4.3 stars† · Amazon rating as of Oct 2026
The M18 covers the basics an ergonomic chair should: a 2D headrest, 2D armrests, adjustable lumbar support, a seat that rises from about 17 to 21 in (44–54 cm), and a recline SIHOO lists as 108–128°. The seat is 18 in deep and doesn't slide. SIHOO's listing says it suits people from about 5'6" to 6'2". SIHOO's UK site rates it for 300 lb. The warranty is 3 years, with 30-day returns.
- Worth it if: you want adjustable lumbar and a headrest for the least money, and you're roughly average height or taller.
- Skip it if: you're under about 5'6" (the seat may feel deep), or you want arms that pivot (the M57 has 3D arms).
Marsail ergonomic mesh office chair: best value
4.2 stars† · Amazon rating as of Oct 2026
For about the same price as the M18, the Marsail has more adjustment in the places you touch most. The lumbar pad moves 2.16 in up and down and 1.18 in forward and back. The 3D armrests flip up, and the headrest is 2D. The seat is a 3.14 in foam cushion rather than mesh. Marsail lists a 90–120° recline and a 5-year warranty. Marsail's own site rates it for 300 lb.
- Worth it if: you want the most adjustable lumbar and arms for the money, or you prefer a padded seat to a mesh one.
- Skip it if: you need a confirmed seat-height range before buying. Amazon lists only the 21.6 in top height for this exact listing.
Staples Dexley: highest rated, with a 5-year warranty
4.5 stars† · Amazon rating as of Oct 2026
The Dexley is Staples' own mesh task chair, and it had the highest star rating of the seven. You get adjustable lumbar support, a headrest that adjusts in height and angle, height-adjustable arms, and a synchro-tilt mechanism with a 3-position tilt lock and tension knob. Staples lists a seat height of 17.4–21 in and an 18.3 in seat depth (not adjustable). It's rated for 275 lb based on 5–10 hours of daily use, meets ANSI/BIFMA standards, and has a 5-year manufacturer limited warranty.
- Worth it if: you want a longer warranty from a big retailer, plus synchro tilt (the seat and back recline together).
- Skip it if: you're over 275 lb, or you want arms that move forward/back or pivot.
FlexiSpot OC3: a headrest and three recline positions
4.1 stars† · Amazon rating as of Oct 2026
FlexiSpot's OC3 has a passive (spring-backed) lumbar pad with 1.9 in of height adjustment, a 2D headrest, height-adjustable arms, and a 90–130° recline that locks in three positions. FlexiSpot lists a seat height of 18.5–22.4 in and a 300 lb capacity. We couldn't confirm the seat depth or the warranty length, because the sources we checked give different figures, so check both on the listing before you buy.
- Worth it if: you want a headrest and a lockable recline from a desk brand you may already know.
- Skip it if: you want lumbar support you can push forward, or you need the seat depth and warranty pinned down first.
Flash Furniture Kelista: simple mesh task chair
4.3 stars† · Amazon rating as of Oct 2026
The Kelista is a mid-back mesh task chair rather than a full ergonomic chair. It has a curved back for lumbar support (not adjustable), no headrest, flip-up arms, and a tilt lock with tension knob. Flash lists a 20.25 × 19 in seat, a seat height of 17.25–20.75 in, a 250 lb capacity, ANSI/BIFMA X5.1-17 compliance, and a 1-year limited warranty. Only a few were in stock in this color when we checked.
- Worth it if: you sit for shorter stretches and want a plain, breathable chair whose arms flip up out of the way.
- Skip it if: you work long days. The Marsail and SIHOO M18 cost less and add adjustable lumbar and a headrest.
SIHOO M57: the most adjustable, if it's on sale
4.3 stars† · Amazon rating as of Oct 2026
The M57 is SIHOO's step up from the M18. It has 3D armrests, a 2D headrest that tilts and lifts, and lumbar support that adjusts in height and depth. SIHOO lists a 90–126° recline, a seat height of 46–55 cm (18.1–21.7 in), and an 18.1 in seat depth. It is rated for 300 lb. It has a 3-year warranty and 30-day returns. At full list price it's no longer a budget chair, so it only belongs here while it's discounted.
- Worth it if: you want the most adjustment on this list and it's still discounted when you check.
- Skip it if: the sale has ended. The M18 or Marsail covers most of the same ground for less.
Amazon Basics Office Task Chair: the cheapest baseline
4.3 stars (22,195 ratings) · Amazon rating as of Oct 2026
This is a padded, faux-leather, mid-back task chair, not an ergonomic chair. It has height adjustment, swivel and padded fixed arms, but no adjustable lumbar or headrest. Amazon lists a 16.5 in seat depth, a 20.1 in seat width, an overall height of 34.8–38.6 in, and a 275 lb capacity. The listing doesn't state a warranty. We include it as a baseline, so you can see what a little more money for the M18 or Marsail gets you.
- Worth it if: you need a chair for short sessions, a spare room or a tight budget, and you prefer a padded seat.
- Skip it if: you sit for several hours a day and want back support you can adjust.
Which budget office chair should you buy?
- Most people: SIHOO M18, for adjustable lumbar, a headrest and a 3-year warranty when it's on sale.
- Most adjustment for the money: Marsail, with 2-way lumbar and 3D flip-up arms for the money.
- Longest warranty from a big retailer: Staples Dexley, with 5 years and 4.5 stars.
- Most adjustable overall: SIHOO M57, but only while it's discounted.
- Just need a seat: Amazon Basics, the cheapest of the seven.
Pair any of these with a desk at the right height. Our standing desk guide and monitor arm guide cover the other half of a comfortable setup.
Budget office chair FAQ
What is the best budget ergonomic office chair?
Based on published specs and Amazon ratings, the SIHOO M18 is a solid all-round pick. It has adjustable lumbar, a 2D headrest, 2D arms and a 3-year warranty, and it was on sale when we checked. The Marsail has more adjustable lumbar and 3D arms. The Staples Dexley has the longest warranty (5 years) and the highest Amazon rating of the seven (4.5).
Is a budget office chair good enough for working from home?
It can be, if it has lumbar support you can adjust, a seat height that lets your feet rest flat with your elbows at desk height, and a seat depth that fits your legs. Five of the seven chairs here have adjustable lumbar. The Amazon Basics and Flash Kelista don't, which makes them better suited to shorter sessions.
What's the difference between 2D, 3D and flip-up armrests?
2D armrests move up/down and forward/back. 3D armrests also pivot in or out. Flip-up arms fold out of the way so you can pull closer to the desk. In this comparison the Marsail and SIHOO M57 have 3D arms, the SIHOO M18 has 2D, and the Marsail and Flash Kelista have flip-up arms.
Do any budget office chairs have adjustable seat depth?
None of the seven chairs here lists a sliding seat. Listed seat depths run from 16.5 in (Amazon Basics) to 19 in (Flash Kelista), and we couldn't confirm the FlexiSpot OC3's, so check the depth against your thigh length. A seat slider is usually found on pricier chairs like the Steelcase Series 1, which is covered in our ergonomic chairs guide.
How much weight can a budget office chair hold?
In this comparison the ratings run from 250 lb (Flash Kelista) to 275 lb (Staples Dexley and Amazon Basics) to 300 lb (SIHOO M18 and M57, Marsail and FlexiSpot OC3). Where a listing gives two numbers, we use the lower one.
Mesh or padded seat?
Mesh stays cooler and keeps its shape. Foam padding feels softer at first. The Marsail and Amazon Basics have padded seats, and the SIHOO, Staples, FlexiSpot and Flash chairs are mesh or mostly mesh.
